REPORTS

Junior Dressage report from Speedgate 18th July 2010

The qualifier for the Lincoln championships was held at Speedgate on 18th July and it was an early start for Gabi Pitman and Jess Hunn who both had early Riding Test times.

The teams all arrived in plenty of time, despite Brands Hatch efforts to delay us due to the amount of traffic it generated with their nearby event. All our horses/ponies looked immaculate with RVRC saddlecloths.

We knew we had our work cut out as Ardingly and Sevenoaks had fielded teams in both the Riding Test and Dressage but as the results began to come through we began to do our maths and with Imogen winning her arena in the riding test we became hopeful that Rother Valley would qualify, and the team won which takes them through to Lincoln.

The dressage team results were a long time coming but finally when posted Laura Craner won her arena, with great performances all round and the Juniors had qualified in both the Dressage and Riding Tests.

All the hard work the girls had put in over the last 5 months had paid off with both teams doing really well and some fantastic individual performances.

After the presentation of rosettes the teams went home, only to be told a few days later that one rider was eliminated due to a flu certificate and it altered the results. Rother Valley have still won the riding test with 3 rider scores so great news, off to Lincoln we go.

Good luck to all teams at Lincoln and well done for representing RVRC at Speedgate.

Senior Area 10 Winter Dressage, Ardingly
15th February 2010

The day dawned bright and sunny – OK it didn’t, it was dull and freezing cold and an early start for me!

The team consisted the following:

Shane Petkovic Nancy
Lisa Pilbeam Corby
Tanya Draude Bill
Sarah Baldwin Rocky

All horses had not been ridden regularly due to the awful weather we had been having and so I think no-one would mind me saying we weren’t at our best performance (apart from Corby!).  We all did reasonable tests and our team came 5th overall which was actually a good result. As individuals Lisa won her arena and Rocky was 5th in his arena. Lisa and Corby were so far out in front it was almost embarrassing - Corby is for sale and would be a very good buy, I do hope someone who wants to do our dressage teams buys him as we don’t want him going to the opposition!

Junior Area 10 Winter Dressage, Ardingly
15th February 2010

The sun shone at Ardingly for the area 10 Dressage qualifier and Rother Valley had 2 junior teams representing them.
All our riders were turned out smartly with RVRC saddlecloths and were a real credit to our club. The teams consisted of Rebecca and Katy Manford, Laura Craner, Emma Baker, Beth Witham, Jessica Hunn, Meg Parr and Sienna Hammond with some riders riding their first tests in a team competition for RVRC and all rode good tests with the final team placings 3rd and 4th.

Individually we had some riders in the top placings. Laura Craner won the Intermediate Horse Trials test with Sienna Hammond 6th. Rebecca Manford was 4th in the Novice 25 with Katy finishing 5th. Well done.

The event was a great start to our 2010 dressage challenge with new team members and new ponies.

SHOW JUMPING TEAM NEWS

SENIOR & JUNIOR SJ TEAM MANAGER:
Betsy Davis 07885 743356 davisbetsy@hotmail.co.uk

SJ Indoor Team, Duckhurst, October

SJ Team Training Dates 2010:

Team training will be with Shane but please book in with Betsy on 07885 743356.

All team training sessions will be at Poppinghole Farm, Robertsbridge (TN32 5BN) with Shane and will be £10 per person. If there are not enough people to enter then no one will go.

The team show jumping for seniors & juniors will be a maximum of 80cm in the first round and will go up in the second round and perhaps a third round (jump off) if required.

Team style jumping is a maximum of 85cm and is one round only. For those that do not know what style jumping is, basically it is like riding a dressage test over jumps, you have to do certain movements before and after jumping the course, saluting the judge, plenty of canter before the bell is given to start & finish and you are marked on position, rhythm, action, balance etc.
Each fence is given a maximum of 10 points, in addition the judges may award up to 40 marks when riding on the flat. To include:
10 marks for assessment of riding of track and effectiveness
10 marks for security and effectiveness of the lower leg
10 marks for balance and upper body position
10 marks for co-ordination and independent rein aids
An additional 20 marks will be given for the assessment of the rider before and after jumping the track with changes of rein and pace.
Penalties are slightly different from the normal rules e.g. a knockdown will be 2 penalties rather than 4 and a first refusal on the course will be 3 penalties.

We do have great fun at team training sessions and at the area qualifiers, so if you think this is your cup of tea then please call me on 0788 574 3356.
Hope to see you all soon!!

REPORTS

Area Qualifyer, Felbridge, 13th  June 2010

The Rother Valley show jumping team squad turned up on 13th June at a dry, bright and sunny Felbridge showground that was recovering from flooding after recent heavy rain. But their performance was in no way dampened with a junior and senior team qualifying for the National Championships in Lincoln in September.

The re jigging of arenas after the floods meant that the junior teams were jumping in the outdoor school, but this did not pose a problem for our Novice team of four - Emma Baker, Meg Parr, Lolly Thompson and Megan Wrenn who cantered off with first place as a team and individual first place for Megan (Wrenn). Junior Novice individuals, Jess Sweet and Danielle Ploughman also put in good rounds but some unlucky faults prevented them being placed.

Meanwhile the junior and senior the style (equitation) jumping was taking place, one round of jumps judged on the quality of canter before and after the round and the style and effectiveness of the rider over the jumps. When the scores were announced Rother Valley made an excellent showing, with the junior team (same members as the Novice team) picking up second place with individual third for Megan Wrenn and the seniors getting first place as a team, with Andrea Furness topping the leader board and Nicky Saint coming fourth individually. Shane Petkovic and Amanda Smith made up the winning senior team, with Amanda only arriving with her horse plaited because she was training its mane to lie on the right side!

The senior Novice team also put up a good performance in the impressive outdoor sand arena, complete with ornamental pond. Team members Shane, Nicky, Andrea and Betsy Davis pulled off a team second place with Betsy just missing out on individual first place, coming second individually and Nicky third.

The intermediate teams swung into action in the afternoon and put in further good performances to gain an individual second place for Gabi Pitman in the junior section, who will need to wait to see if this is good enough for her to qualify for the Championship. The senior team, made up of Vicky Stephenson, Amanda Smith, Andrea Furness and Emma Merrick were third with Emma third individually.

The time, energy and organisation put in by team managers Shane and Betsy should not be underestimated. Not only have they organised practice sessions, put the teams together, sorted out entries, been organising fund raising events towards the championships (just as well they did!), but they were there competing on the day and encouraging and organising the rest of us! So a huge thank you to them for their efforts and well done to everyone who played their part and achieved a good set of results for our Club.

REPORTS

Festival of the Horse - Redlands, Sevenoaks, 17th April 2010.

First things first I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Elaine Wrenn who jump judged ALL day, and also Sharon & Suzanne who took over jump judging from Sarah and myself.

This event was a qualifier for the BRC championships at Aston Le Walls. Teams of 4 and pairs had to jump a course of show jumps and then straight onto the cross country course.

After weeks of putting our teams together (lots of training, organising & headaches!!) the day was finally here, and even the sun came out for what seemed like the first time in 2010!  Sarah Foy (Junior team manager) and myself (Heather Deane) were there early as we had volunteered to do some jump judging at the beginning of the day while the mums & partners helped get the girls ready for junior teams.

We watched the juniors galloping past from our position jump judging, the course was 'different'! riders had to really concentrate as the course was really twisty and it was difficult to remember where the next jump was ... full concentration needed!

The junior team were: Emma Baker, Laura Craner, Meg Parr & Megan Wrenn, the time given to ride the xc course seemed to be really fast, and although all of the team knew this and really went for it (it was scary watching them!) but they all had time faults which we couldn't understand, but never mind next year we will let the handbrake off completely and find 6th gear!   The juniors all did really well, they all got round individually - with the team finishing 3rd overall, a fantastic result! The Junior Pairs: Meg Parr & Meg Wrenn stormed round coming 6th.

Very well done to all the team - all of you did fantastically well and behaved impeccably (unlike some 'individuals' from other clubs!) you are all a credit to the RV Riding Club.

So, next was the turn of the senior teams, we had entered two teams, we started off really well with Kate Ludden riding her Mums lovely horse 'Dave' and Berith riding her gorgeous, speedy 'Mary' storming around clear, Harry Brown riding 'Lennie' went clear sj'ing then just had one stop at the ditch on the xc and Harriet Wolley had one down in the show jumping on 'Tom' but then stormed around the xc clear.

It was really exciting as the next team started to warm up for their turn. Unfortunately Kate Weatherley only got half way round the xc course before she was' tipped' overboard at the ditch!! (she was having nightmares about ditches the night before the event) but she was ok and still in one piece thank goodness, I helped her up and she went off looking for her horse 'Naughty Phoebe' who had cantered off without her! Amanda CP riding 'Ash' zoomed around having just one unfortunate stop but the pair o them were flying!, Kate Ludden then rode her new young horse 'Coco' - having a really lovely clear round! I don't think those two will be in the novice team next year ... fantastic! '

Also a big thank you for Jenni Stacey and her lovely horse Amy for joining the RVRC team this year, they had a storming xc and a lovely sj'ing round in both the team event and again in the pairs - thanks again Jenni and hope to see you in June at the horse trials teams ... get practising your dressage!

Well done everyone, thank you for a great day!
